Travellers looking to get a South Pacific over-water bungalow experience can now do so in the Caribbean, as Sandals resort in Jamaica has introduced the concept to its shores.

Sandals South Coast – formerly known as Sandals Whitehouse European Village and Spa – is a well-known luxury resort.

It has recently undergone renovations and opened five over-the-water bungalows, and has now unveiled its plans for 12 more that will be accessible via a heart shaped pier. The bungalows are naturally aimed at honeymooners looking for the romantic bungalow experience, and to further entice couples looking to tie the knot, there will also be an over-the-water wedding chapel with “breathtaking 360-degree, panoramic water views and a glass floor aisle”. For those looking to add a bit of glamour to their nuptials, the happy couple can arrive at the chapel on a boat.

From there, the resort is designed to help guests relax – particularly with an over-the-water bar, where guests can hang out in a hammock and enjoy a drink above the Caribbean Sea, and a swim-up bar so guests can enjoy their drink without ever leaving the water.

While a fixture in places like Bora Bora and the Maldives, where coral reef protects shores and provides calm waters, over-the-water bungalows haven’t previously been constructed in the Caribbean due to the rougher weather conditions and seas.

However, this is changing throughout the region, in an effort to appeal to North and South American travellers who want the South Pacific experience without the travel times. Mexico has seen its first resort with the bungalows open recently, and a resort in Panama with over-the-water bungalows is set to open in 2019.
