“Thanks to the light and airy architecture, the public swimming pool fits perfectly to its surroundings,” the citation said. “The wooden structure softens the transition between inside and out, and invites people to enter the gently undulating pavilion situated in the heart of the park.”
The Nooderpark swimming pool was built to replace the previous pool, which was demolished after 40 years because it was old and used too much energy.
There are now two 25-metre pools and a water slide inside the building, as well as restaurants, offices and staff rooms.
There is another 25-metre pool located outside the building, as well as a lawn for sunbathing, a toddler pool and parking area.
The new pool’s energy bill is 75% lower, because it is designed so that rain water is collected outside, then stored and purified before flowing into the pool.
The pool is located in Noorderpark, a beautiful green oasis that spans over 45 hectares. Some of the more popular features of the park include a stage and space for concerts and festivals.
There are also many trees and green areas for picnics in the park surrounding the pool, as well as bike routes and walking paths.
We definitely agree with the judges that this pool is seriously impressive.
