J.K. Rowling’s film adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens worldwide on 18 November, but fans can get an up-close look at the movie’s costumes this week in Philadelphia.
The city centre Macy’s, features the ensemble from Eddie Redmayne’s character Newt Scamander — complete with the brown leather bag that features prominently in the trailer — as well as the costumes of co-stars Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston, and Alison Sudol.
Based on Rowling’s 2001 companion book to the beloved Harry Potter series, the film marks the author’s screenwriting debut. Set in New York in 1926, Fantastic Beasts follows Newt Scamander as he travels the world researching for his eponymous book, encountering magical creatures along the way. A spokesperson from Warner Bros. Pictures tells Lonely Planet that the costumes are making stops in several locations around the country in anticipation of the film’s release, including New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Orlando.
The costumes can be seen from the west-facing windows of Macy’s until 23 October, which happens to coincide perfectly with the city’s other Harry Potter festivities this weekend. The Chestnut Hill neighbourhood’s Harry Potter Festival kicks off on Saturday, with a section of the town transforming into Hogsmeade, and featuring a Butterbeer pub crawl, the Tri-Wizard Straw Maze, the sorting hat, live owls, and a Quidditch tournament. It’s a magical weekend to visit Philadelphia.
