In 2008 Nick Wharton and Dariece Swift saved $40,000 in one year so they could quit their jobs and travel the world. The couple have been travelling the world ever since.

After returning from a vacation in Mexico, the couple sold all their possessions including their condominium and their car to be able to afford to travel for a full year.

“Nick also worked numerous overtime hours at his job. If he worked any overtime (above 40 hours / week), he was paid time and a half. If he were to work statutory holidays, he was paid triple time. If he chose to work on weekends, he was paid double time. That money added up fast,” says Dariece.

“We also cut back on our spending. Rather than movie nights at the theatre, we rented a movie. Instead of getting my hair dyed and cut at a fancy salon, I opted for boxed dye and a cheap cut. We didn’t go out for daily coffees, but rather enjoyed the free stuff at work,” she says.

Once the couple had saved enough to travel for a year, they set off an a 13 month backpacking adventure. They then returned to Canada for a year to save more money and took off again after coming up with a new way to make money while travelling. The couple now run the successful travel blog, Goats On The Road, and have also helped fund their travels by spending a year teaching English in China.

The couple now earn more from their travel blog than they used to earn back home in Canada. “We’re definitely not going back!” says Dariece.

They recently travelled through Central and Eastern Europe for 5 months, and ended up renting apartment in Malta for 2 of those while the other 3 were spent moving around. The couple says the like to travel at a slower pace because they love to meet the local people and forge real friendships with them.

“We’re currently on the Caribbean island of Grenada and in November we will be moving on. We’re heading to Turkey for a blogging conference, with plans to spend 2017 continent hopping! We are going to start in Colombia and make our way to Argentina. After that, we would like to touch down in Africa and Asia. We haven’t been to South America yet, so we are really excited!” says Dariece.
