Disneyland Resort in California will be getting a new attraction themed around the Guardians of the Galaxy, a Marvel Comics superhero team that featured in a hit film in 2014, with a sequel set to follow in May 2017.
In summer 2017, Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim will open the attraction, dropping guests into a story with the characters from the comic books and the film. The attraction will transform the structure that is currently home to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, an attraction that takes visitors through a spooky hotel and gets more terrifying when they end up in a falling elevator. In the Guardians version, visitors will follow the character of Tanaleer Tivan, or the Collector. He will have relics collected from around the galaxy, including the main characters, and visitors will have to take part in a plan to free them.
The new adventure is a collaboration from those who worked on the comic books, the films, and at Walt Disney. Joe Rohde, Portfolio Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering, said the ride is “comical chaos; a very funny, very irreverent story and a really wonderful addition to Disney California Adventure.” The new attraction was announced this week at San Diego Comic-Con, and according to Disney, the new attraction “will anchor a broader universe of Super Heroes that will grow over time at Disney California Adventure Park”.
Naturally, some fans of the former Tower of Terror have expressed their sadness – and anger – about the imminent demise of the ride, but it will still be available until early January.
