We didn’t need yet another reason to visit Seoul in South Korea, but it has become even more attractive following the news that a cutting-edge entertainment complex called Paradise City is due to be built there. Work will begin in September 2016 on the 9800m2 entertainment plaza, and it is sure to enhance the profile of the city that has already given us the best in fashion, design, food and entertainment.
Paradise City will be comprised of two buildings known as the Sandbox (3600m2) and Nightclub (6200m2), which will contain retail outlets and entertainment amenities. They will blend in by sharing the architectural language of the immediate surrounding buildings, and work is expected to be completed on the project in time for the 2018 winter Olympic Games.
The project is being undertaken by Dutch architects MVRDV in partnership with the Korean Gansam Architects, and it will have four main zones. We can expect to see a spa; a hotel with a casino and convention facilities; a plaza, with a boutique hotel, food court, retail space and galleries; and the entertainment square, which will house retail outlets and a nightclub.
The two buildings will be situated in a public square, the entrance to which will be marked by a giant golden spot designed to look “like a sunbeam.” This is expected to become a landmark for those flying into the capital by air, as the complex will be situated a mere ten-minute walk from Incheon Airport. It will be easy to access as it is situated in a wider tourist hub that will have a direct monorail link to the airport.
The project has already attracted big names from Korea’s social scene, and actor Kim Soo-hyun is now the ambassador of the Paradise City development.
