The V&A in London has launched its big exhibition looking into the history of underwear and what it says about us.
Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear tells the story of underwear design from 18th century to present day. The exhibit looks at the personal and historic connections we have to underwear design.
One of its main interests is looking into how underwear reflected the different and evolving standards of beauty and what was understood to be a beautiful body.
The exhibit note says that Undressed seeks to look at underwear’s “role in moulding the body to a fashionable ideal.”
The exhibition shows original models of underwear, as well as photographs and artistic renditions of underwear throughout the ages, from men’s long and tight bathing trunks, to Agent Provocateur lingerie.
Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear, sponsored by Agent Provocateur and Revlon, from 16 April 2016 – 12 March 2017.
