Kayak, a travel search engine based in the USA, has released its 2016 Summer Travel Hacker Guide, which shows the median airfares, hotel rates and when to book a trip to the summer’s most popular destinations based on the company’s data.

One of the top trending summer travel destinations is, perhaps unsurprisingly, Olympic-host Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. According to Kayak, there has been a 127% increase in interest in a trip to the city compared to last year. But anyone considering a trip may want to book soon – the guide says anyone planning to go in August – when the games are being held – can expect to see airfare and hotel rates almost double.

Rio is listed as the top trending summer travel destination followed by Reykjavik, Iceland; Tokyo, Japan; Calgary, Canada; Bali, Indonesia; Montreal, Canada; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Dublin, Ireland; Lisbon Portugal and Toronto, Canada.

For anyone seeking a European vacation, Reykjavík takes the top spot, with a 75% increase in interest from travellers since last year. Prices will peak in July, so Kayak recommends booking at least 10 weeks in advance.

The other top destinations in Europe are Cyprus; Krakow, Poland; Porto, Portugal; Helsinki, Finland; Dublin; Oslo, Norway; Split, Croatia; Bilbao, Spain and Naples, Italy.

For American travellers looking for a weekend away, the cultural city of New Orleans, Louisiana takes the top spot, with hotel rates at their lowest in August.

Other cities of interest for weekend travellers include Nashville, Tennessee; Atlantic City, New Jersey; San Francisco, California; Ocean City, Maryland; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Austin, Texas; Louisville, Kentucky; Duluth, Minnesota and Key West, Florida.

The survey also shows off the most popular southern hemisphere destinations – once again lead by Rio de Janeiro, followed by Santa Cruz, Bolivia; Zanzibar; Brisbane, Australia; Cuenca, Ecuador; Madagascar; Cape Town, South Africa; Montevideo, Uruguay; Sydney, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand.

At the beginning of 2016, Kayak released its Travel Hacker Guide for 2016, in which Barcelona, Spain was the top trending city for the year, followed by Madrid.
