Germany's last travelling circus bear called Ben is saved in Bavaria

Police in Bavaria have seized what is believed to be the last brown bear owned by a travelling circus in Germany.

The circus’ owner apparently attempted to evade the authorities but police were able to secure the animal’s enclosure and remove it with the aid of a veterinarian. Police were alerted to the case after the bear, named Ben, was allegedly left alone twice in the space of a week and, additionally, the region in which the bear was found prohibits the possession of wild animals. This Friday, Germany’s parliament will hold a debate on whether to introduce a nationwide ban on keeping such animals. Animal rights groups say they will now try to ensure that 22-year-old circus bear Ben is taken to a sanctuary which is suited to his needs. Read more: thelocal.de
