United Arab Emirates set for greenest resort in world

A resort set to open in the United Arab Emirates is being billed as the world’s greenest eco resort and will feature many environmentally-conscious features such 157,000-square-feet of solar panels, as well allowing guests to forage for organic produce and enjoy an organic spa.

The project, called the Oasis Eco Resort, will be located in Liwa and will be built by the Dubai-based Eco Resort Group by 2020.

London-based Baharash Architecture designed the resort around a spring at its centre. Baharash Bagherian, designer and founder of Baharash Architecture, said the inspiration behind the design is rooted in UAE’s heritage.

“At the very early stages of the project, we found out that we could extract groundwater using a deep well. This gave us an opportunity to create a story around a spring, which was of critical importance to Bedouins for trade and transportation routes”.

There will be 84 interconnecting suites of various types, which will all feature views of the oasis and an outdoor terrace.

Some of the environmental benefits will include recycling waste water on site for irrigation, onsite waste management, the enforcement of a zero emission zone and 157,000 square feet of solar panels.

The bar and restaurant will feature organic ingredients grown on site and guests will be able to forage organic produce from onsite allotments or catch fish from the spring. With the help of a chef, they can them incorporate those elements into a meal. The resort will have wildlife biologists and conservationists on staff.

The project cost is set a $21 million USD.
