An artists’ collective in Mumbai is giving the city’s taxis a make-over, with vivid new interiors created by local designers.
The Taxi Fabric project has decorated dozens of taxis and autorickshaws in Mumbai with bespoke upholstery depicting themes from Indian life, from religion to the Quit India movement that led to Indian independence. The project is funded by Kickstarter donations, which received a massive boost after a Taxi Fabric vehicle was featured in the pop video for Coldplay’s Hymn for the Weekend. The group is hoping that the inspiring designs will make Mumbai’s taxis as recognised as London’s black cabs and New York’s yellow taxicabs.
