Gorgeous photo finalists showcase the world we live in

After months of competition, the countless entries to the Smithsonian.com 13th Annual Photo Contest have been whittled down to just 70 finalists. The resulting shortlist is a stunning insight into the world in 2015.

Readers are encouraged to vote for the Readers’ Choice winner online up until 21 March. A total of nine awards will be announced on Tuesday, 22 March including the Grand Prize and all category winners.

Contestants submitted their images under seven categories – The American Experience, Travel, Natural World, People, Sustainable Travel, Altered Images and Mobile.

The Sustainable Travel is a brand new category for 2015 recognising a photographer who “demonstrates leadership and an active commitment to travel for environmentally responsible purposes”.

Entries for the 2016 competition will also open to photographers on 22 March and the competition is bound to be as competitive as this year. View all the finalist’s entries here.
