Ireland's remote Rathlin Island seeks innkeeper

If you’re looking to really get away from it all, a small island off the coast of Northern Ireland is looking for someone to run its newly refurbished historic inn.

The Manor House on Rathlin Island, an island off the coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland, and is the northernmost point of the region. Six miles from the mainland, Rathlin is the only inhabited offshore island in Northern Ireland, and is the most northerly inhabited island off the Irish coast. The L-shaped island is only 15 miles from the Mull of Kintyre and is one of Northern Ireland's Special Areas of Conservation due to it's large bird's colony.

The Manor House Guest Inn on Rathlin Island is looking for the right person to become the operator of the 12-bedroom inn, which is owned by the National Trust. The inn received a grant from the UK’s Coastal Communities Fund for its redevelopment in 2015 and is now set to reopen this summer.

Rathlin Island is located 6km offshore from Ballycastle, a town in County Antrim, and is reached by a regular ferry service. It’s an L-shaped island only 6.5km long and 4km wide and while the rugged island has only about 140 inhabitants, it is filled with thousands of seals and nesting seabirds in warmer months.

The inn is looking to become a certified 3-star guest inn and showcase the island as a unique tourist destination. The position would also provide accommodation.

“The Manor House is of historical importance locally and sits beside the harbour with fantastic views of the bay. It will be an economic driver for the Island where the RSPB Sea Bird Centre and Irish Lighthouses Trail already attract thousands of tourists annually”, according to the job posting.

The visitor centre at the Rathlin West Light Sea Bird Centre has also undergone major refurbishments and will reopen to the public in late March. For the first time people will be able to access the ‘upside down’ lighthouse built on Rathlin’s cliffs. The centre will also be part of the all-Ireland lighthouse trail, Great Lighthouses of Ireland, according to Discover Northern Ireland.
