Starbucks to open its first cafe in Italy

International coffee chain Starbucks is taking on its biggest challenge to date: opening its first store in coffee-obsessed Italy, in Milan in 2017.

The chain’s founder Howard Schultz was initially inspired to open his first coffee shop after a trip to Milan and Verona in in the early 1980s where he experienced the Italian passion for creating the perfect espresso first-hand. The owner of the new franchise, entrepreneur Antonio Percassi, has admitted he is in for ‘a unique challenge’, but has said he thinks that ‘Italian people are ready to live the Starbucks experience.’ Even if the cafe isn’t popular with locals, it’s almost guaranteed to be a hit with tourists looking for a taste of home.
