In a surprise blow to student freedom, the University of Jaffna has imposed a strict new dress code for students and staff.
Amongst the list of banned items are T-shirts, jeans and, most controversially, beards, causing particular outrage amongst Muslim students. Another bizarre provision of the code requires all female students to wear saris on Fridays. A university spokesperson has said that the dress code will restore Sri Lanka’s ‘moral traditions’ on campus, but the ban is being fiercely opposed by the Jaffna student union.
