George Steinmetz believes in getting the whole picture from the sky, a bird’s eye view that captures everything from a different perspective.

A photographer and an explorer, Steinmetz spent much of 2014 hopping into a helicopter and circling New York documenting it in pictures. The result was a collection of images collected in a new book entitled New York Air.

The images are introduced on his website by mentioning the difficulties of capturing New York from the skies. “[Steinmetz] soon realized that a definitive portrait of the city would be impossible as it is going through major construction boom, with its new skyline and waterfront landscape, dazzling contemporary architecture.”

The photographer decided to create a collection that captured the complexity of living in such a sophisticated urban landscape, and the photos are amazing as well as surprisingly intimate. The photographs are collected in New York Air which can be bought here, whilst more of his aerial adventures can be seen on his Instagram.
