A Unesco official has said that cruise tourists are ‘wearing out the ruins of Pompeii’.
Due to their tight visiting schedules, thousands of cruise-ship passengers all take the same route through the archaeological site. This has led to certain popular parts of the site, for example the steps of the Temple of Apollo, getting very worn in recent years. The official suggested that the problem could be solved if more cruise tourists chose to visit less well-known archaeological sites, such as the ruins at Herculaneum or Villa Poppea.
