Carnival time in the northern Italian town of Ivrea is marked by a unique event seen nowhere else on earth: the Battle of the Oranges.
Participants dress up in costumes and recreate a medieval battle between Ivrea’s tyrannical rulers and its ordinary townspeople, but with one key difference: the weapons are replaced with oranges. Masked ‘guards’ on floats armed with crates of oranges are the target for hundreds of peasants dressed in checked outfits. Flying fruit fills the air, exploding on impact and creating a pulpy mess on the ground once the battle is over.
