Cage divers relieved as sharks return to Gansbaai

Great white sharks have returned to the Gansbaai area after cage diving operators reported that they had almost disappeared last month.

Marine Biologist Alison Towner said that in January cage diving operators were struggling to find any sharks despite extensive efforts to locate them. However, recent sightings have left many tour operators in the area optimistic that their numbers are increasing and that the sharks are returning to the Gansbaai coast – so it will be business as usual for cage diving in the coming weeks. Towner suggested that seasonality and the ‘El Nino’ weather event could have caused the sharks disappearance, or that the whale carcasses found in the Western Cape over the last few weeks could have drawn them away.
