Robert the Bruce plaque installed in Dumfries bakery

A plaque has been unveiled in the spot where Robert the Bruce began his bid for the throne of Scotland – and it’s in a branch of the bakery chain Greggs. The shop in Dumfries, in the Scottish Borders, was formerly a church.

Bruce slew his rival John “Red” Comyn on the site in February 1306, before beginning his campaign for Scottish independence. Newcastle-based Greggs has over 1500 branches around the UK and specializes in pasties. The Bruce Trust hope to build a visitor centre close to the site. Read more: bbc.co.uk
