Thaipusam festival kicks off in Malaysia with procession to Batu Caves

Some 150,000 worshippers are expected to accompany a dazzling 7.3m silver chariot in the annual procession which officially launches the Hindu Thaipusam festival in Malaysia.

The procession will begin at Kuala Lumpur’s Sri Mahamariamman temple at 10pm local time Friday and is expected to reach the Batu Caves holy site at 2.30pm Saturday, returning to the KL temple by midnight on Monday. Dozens of KL roads will be shut for the procession, during which devotees are known for performing incredible acts of self-mortification.
