Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama points to his swollen right eye as he talks to journalists before boarding his chartered flight in Dharmsala, India, on 19 January. The Tibetan leader said that he was going to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, New York for a regular medical checkup.

Orthodox believers celebrate the holiday of the Epiphany on 19 January, and traditionally bathe in holes cut through thick ice on rivers and ponds to cleanse themselves with water deemed holy for the day.

The sunrise over Holme Pierrepont, Nottinghamshire , as swathes of the country have been warned of icy conditions. The Met Office issued a yellow warning of ice stretching from the northern half of Scotland down to northern England, as outbreaks of sleet and snow overnight threatened to create slick conditions in sub-zero temperatures.
