Honduras presents artifacts from lost ‘White City’

An international team of archaeologists has extracted two artifacts from La Ciudad Blanca (the White City), a pre-Columbian complex in eastern Honduras that has been lost for centuries.

Archaeologists estimate that the complex, which is the remains of a previously unknown culture, could be four times bigger than Copan, a World Heritage Site in western Honduras hosting some of Central America’s most impressive Mayan architecture. The artifacts – a vessel decorated with a vulture’s head and a jar featuring the head of a jaguar – were found in the area T1, named ‘Jaguar City’ by President Juan Orlando Hernandez, and date between the years 1000 and 1500. The president presented the artifacts to the public on Tuesday.
