Albania’s old secret police HQ to become museum

The House of Leaves in Albania’s capital Tirana, considered the equivalent of Germany’s Stasi secret police headquarters, is set to become a unique museum of  the totalitarian state’s control of the population that was conducted through surveillance, espionage and a network of informers.

According to authorities, the museum is due to open in 2016, although the exact date is unclear. Built in 1931, the House of Leaves was initially a clinic, then used by Gestapo during the WWII occupation of Albania, to become a security office for investigations during the period of communist Albania.
