New border checks as Denmark follows Sweden

Following the Swedish government’s introduction of compulsory ID checks on all travellers crossing the border into Sweden from Denmark

Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has announced that the country will carry out random ID checks on a temporary basis at the German border. The checks came into force at 12pm on Monday and will continue for 12 days; they could then be extended for a further 20 days at a time. Rasmussen insists that the measures will not be as extensive as those carried out by Swedish officials, but opponents of the scheme are concerned that further border controls are putting the freedom of movement within the Schengen area at risk.
