Century-old artefacts from Mawson's expedition discovered in Antarctica

Heritage experts in Antarctica have discovered century-old artefacts, including a wool balaclava, from Sir Douglas Mawson’s expedition.

The Mawson’s Huts Foundation team is working to conserve Mawson’s Hut, chipping away snow and ice from the home of the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE), with hopes of restoring the hut to the state it was in when Mawson departed in 1914. The foundation’s chief conservator said the team uncovered many personal items and supplies used by the AAE, including cans, boxes and a broom, in addition to the wool hat. Read more: theguardian.com
