A New Delhi mother who delivered her baby boy in the back of an Uber vehicle has named her son Uber, in honour of the driver who helped deliver him.
The Indian woman, known only as Babli, called a cab after repeated calls for an ambulance went unanswered. Shahnawaz Khan, the driver of the Uber cab that collected Babli and two of her friends on Thursday night immediately realised what was happening. Though he began the journey to Safdarjung Hospital, he pulled over soon after as “the woman was writhing in pain and her friends did not know what to do,” he told the Times of India.
“I pulled out the towels from the seats and poured some drinking water into a bowl. The child was born within minutes and I was really happy to see that he was responding,” Shahnawaz said. They proceeded to the hospital, but Shahnawaz’s role in baby Uber’s extraordinary birth story was not yet over. Upon arriving at the hospital, the Uber driver was asked to take Babli directly to the emergency department. “He picked me up, put me on a stretcher and dragged it into the hospital,” recalled Babli.
Shahnawaz was initially asked if her was the child’s father, but when he relayed the events on the way to the hospital, he was warmly congratulated by the doctors and staff. In acknowledgement of his starring role in the baby’s birth, Babli’s family have asked Shahnawaz to name the baby at an official naming ceremony on the weekend.
