Taipei government claims Airbnb rentals operate without license

The city government of Taipei has ordered Airbnb to take down nearly all of its rental properties, claiming they are operating illegally.

The city’s Department of Information and Tourism said inspections revealed that 95 per cent of the 4200 properties listed on the room-sharing website were operating without a leasing license. The government has ordered Airbnb to remove the offending listings from its website, although Taipei City mayor Ko Wen-je stated that the city lacks affordable hotels. Airbnb has come under fire in Taipei recently after one person purportedly suffered carbon monoxide poisoning and another property was affected by fire at properties listed on the site.
