Giant animal images projected onto St Peter's Basilica

Thousands of people filled St Peter’s Square in the Vatican City last night to watch a spectacular light show where huge images of the natural world were projected onto the facade of St Peter’s Basilica.

Images of animals, including lions and butterflies, were interspersed with ones of polluted air and parched farmland to highlight environmental issues, at a time when the world’s leaders have gathered in Paris to thrash out a new climate deal. The hour-long show featured images by some of the world’s finest photographers, including Sebastiao Salgado, Joel Sartore and Yann Arthus Bertrand accompanied by the sounds of nature such as thunder and birdsong.
