Instagrammers got a special look at the Vatican museums as part of a series of empty museum events that highlight Italian cultural heritage.
The meeting was one of a series of outings, marked on Instagram with the hashtag #emptymuseo, that have been organized in Italian museums over the past year and show off the cultural centres without throngs of visitors.
Organizers Darius Arya, an archeologist, and Erica Firpo, a journalist, worked with the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums to bring in a group of Instagrammers for a very early morning visit of the Vatican Museums. That included access to public and non-public areas, though they did not photograph the Sistine Chapel.
According to Arya, the goal was to showcase the Vatican museums in a way less familiar to most visitors, with a goal of promoting Italy’s cultural heritage.
