There was literally ‘heavy’ competition in the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, held in Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, yesterday.
Anything below 1500 pounds (680 kilos) didn’t stand a chance when faced with rivals approaching 2000 pounds (907 kilos) with the winner, grown by Steve Daletas from Oregon, tipping the scales at 1969 pounds (893 kilos) and beating last year’s winner whose pumpkin had an illegal crack in it. For his efforts Mr Daletas received $12,000. The future of the pumpkin is unknown. Read more: abc7.com
