The Green Island zoo in the Russian Far East town of Ussuriysk, in Primorsky territory, was flooded on Sunday 30 August after torrential showers. The number of animals that drowned in the flood is still unknown, but it’s been confirmed that at least two bears have drowned.
Smaller animals were evacuated in portable cages by the local police but the evacuation of larger animals could not start for a whole day. In the early hours of Tuesday 1 September army specialists, vets and volunteers finally arrived to start rescuing the remaining animals from the flooded zoo. Read more: tass.ru
