Swimming banned at Italy's famous Procida beach

Italy’s environmental protection agency has banned swimming at the famous Cimetero di Procida beach on the island of Procida, which featured in the Oscar-winning film Il Postino, due to unacceptably high levels of E.Coli and fecal bacteria.

The contamination, three times the acceptable level for swimming, is believed to be due to inadequate drainage of human waste. The closure comes at the height of the tourist season and is particularly embarrassing for the island near Naples, which relies on tourism for its economic survival. Read more: thelocal.it
