India withdraws porn ban after public outcry

A plan to ban Internet pornography in India has been hastily abandoned following massive public outcry.

Despite India’s famously conservative attitudes to modesty, the country is one of the world’s largest markets for pornography, and hundreds of thousands of Indians took to social media to oppose the ban, on grounds varying from civil rights to consumer freedom. Access to 857 adult websites will now be restored, but websites displaying explicit images of children will be closed down by internet service providers. Read more: timesofindia.indiatimes.com
