Residents of Rio's favelas to accommodate Olympics visitors

Many entrepreneurial residents of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas are turning their homes into guesthouses and have begun taking bookings from foreigners and Brazilians for next summer’s Olympic games in the city.

In 2008, a “pacification” policy was introduced by the local government. Under the policy, soldiers and marines go into favelas to drive out gangs and crimes, and it is in these pacified shanty towns where B&Bs and guesthouses are being established, mostly in areas close to Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.
