Russian scientists thrilled by new volcanic diamond

A new type of diamond has been discovered in frozen lava of the Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East.

It has been named Tobalchik diamond after the volcano which last erupted in 2012-13. Its geological and mineralogical characteristics are so unique that it’s been classified as a new type of precious gem by Russian scientists. It is also quite large for volcanic rocks, with a range of 250 to 700 microns. Read more: rt.com
