One of Madrid’s oldest and most influential cafes has closed down, shocking locals who have been gathering there since 1887. Café Comercial has long been a place that Madrid society, artists and musicians would congregate; it was also a popular haunt for tourists.
Entering through its revolving doors was like stepping back in time. Madrid residents have taken to social media to bemoan the closure, concerned that Madrid’s city centre is about to become homogenised after the government recently decided to axe rent controls in the city centre, forcing the closure of many family-run businesses. The fourth-generation owners announced the closure via Cafe Comercial’s Facebook page but didn’t reveal the reason for its closure. Read more: thelocal.es
