Alcohol-free beer the fashion in Kabul's markets

The newest trend on the streets of Kabul may seem an unlikely proposition: alcohol-free beer.

Vendors in the ‘Bush Bazaar’ (so dubbed because it was a place to score US military items during the height of the US occupation of Afghanistan) have recently been selling out of alcohol-free beer, which is purportedly sourced from western military bases and resold on the black market. Shopkeepers say the beverage is a popular choice in Afghanistan because it allows locals to enjoy western tastes without shirking the country’s strict Islamic laws and values. Read more: rferl.org
