Strike action leaves tourists queueing for hours outside Pompeii

Over 2000 tourists were left sweltering in a massive queue outside Pompeii on Friday morning after staff called an impromptu union meeting and refused to open the gates.

Tourists, who started to gather at 8.30am, which is the normal opening time of the famous archeological site, were forced to wait outside in temperatures up to 30 degrees centigrade until the gates were finally opened at 10.30am. Italy’s culture minister has said that the staff’s actions were ‘not acceptable’ and would cause ‘incalculable damage’ to the country’s reputation. Read more: telegraph.co.uk
