'Drunk' squirrel causes hundreds of pounds of damage in private club

It may sound a bit nuts but a ‘drunken squirrel’ went on the rampage at a private members’ club and ended up causing hundreds pounds worth of damage to the property.

The secretary of Honeybourne Railway Club beside Evesham in Worcestershire, England was sure that someone had broken into the premises when he arrived at the club.

The BBC reported that Mr Sam Boulter felt there had been intruders when he surveyed the scene of smashed beer bottles and glasses across the floor.

He explained that he had come across a squirrel there on the Saturday morning but when he chased it, the animal disappeared over the counter and when he didn’t see him again, he felt that he had gone out the door.

The 62-year-old secretary claimed that when he went in the following morning, he then saw the squirrel again, this time “staggering around” after emerging from behind a box of crisps.

With money, bottles and other stuff strewn around, Mr Boulter said the animal had obviously run over the beer pumps in the bar and in doing so, managed to turn on the flow of the Caffrey’s Ale tap. He believed that the squirrel must have consumed some of the alcohol as he moved slowly and staggered around the premises.

The secretary said it was his first time to see an animal “a bit worse for wear!”

He estimated that the squirrel’s night out on the town had cost the club about £300.

Nevertheless, when he eventually tracked down the squirrel in a waste paper bin, he allowed it to run back into the wild.

However the Worcester News reported that the squirrel was now officially barred from the premises.
