Private rentals in the Spanish region of Catalonia will be forced to charge a tourist tax under new rules conceived by the regional government.
The tax will cost travellers €0.65 a night in Barcelona and €0.45 elsewhere. The new rules will also limit the number of rooms that can be let per property to two. Owners must now declare their rental activities to the government and also must be present during guest stays. Barcelona’s new left-wing mayor, Ada Colau, has vowed to clamp down on dodgy tourist rentals, rowdy rental guests and to take measures to better manage burgeoning tourist arrivals in the city.
