Spain’s Running of the Bulls tainted by sexual assault and death

Hundreds of people staged a city-wide protest in Pamplona this week after reports of a sexual assault during the San Fermin Running of the Bulls fiesta.

The assault raised concerns among women’s rights activists that the festival encourages ‘jungle behaviour’ and has become a breeding ground for sexual aggression. This year’s festival ran from 6 to 14 July and, as is typical, led to a number of gorings from bulls clashing with run participants. In the Spanish town of Pedreguer, near Alicante, another bull-running festival being held at the same time led to the death of a 44-year-old French tourist who was gored by a bull this week.
