Pyongyang installs dedicated cycling lanes

New cycling lanes have been installed in the North Korean capital city, Pyongyang. Recent photos by Reuters showed the new dedicated lanes running along major thoroughfares in the city.

The lanes were installed in an apparent bid to cut down on road accidents, as previously both cyclists and pedestrians were required to share a small strip of pavement. Though cycling remains an activity of the elite, who can afford to buy bicycles, it has gained popularity over the past few years as an alternative to private car ownership, which is believed to be cost prohibitive for most local residents.
