Man wielding knife causes panic in Rome

Tourists near Rome’s Colosseum were sent into a panic on Monday evening, when a man wielding a kitchen knife threatened a young woman.

The 32-year-old Brazilian man grabbed a 27-year-old Italian woman and forced her to kneel down, pointing the knife at her throat and shouting ‘I’ve been sent by God’. Police intervened immediately and the girl escaped unharmed. A chase ensued, but the police managed to disarm and arrest the man. The incident happened on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, which runs alongside the Roman Forum between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, and is usually thronged with crowds of tourists.
