Thousands of visitors have descended on Tonga this week for the coronation of King Tupou VI. The turnout has topped that of the late King George Tupou V in 2008.
Celebrations over the past eleven days close with the formal crowning of the king at the Royal Palace Grounds in Nuku’alofa on Saturday the fourth of July. Every village, church and school in Tonga has been presenting their hala (a traditional gift offering of food, mats and money) to the Royal family over the past few weeks. The total costs for the coronation have reported to be about an eighth of the last coronation which ran to US$5 million. Read more: radionz.co.nz
