Chinese man keeps pet bears thinking they’re dogs

A man in Yunnan, China kept two Asian black bears as pets for two years before realising they weren’t dogs. Wang Kaiyu said he acquired the bears from someone selling them as ‘puppies’ and raised them for two years as dogs.

Wang began to suspect something was amiss when the ‘dogs’ appetites grew out of control and they started eating chickens from his yard. When he realised his ‘dogs’ were, in fact, Asian black bears – a Class II protected species – they were turned over to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre of Yunnan and are reported as in good health.
