The ‘Sardine Run’ kicks off in South Africa

The greatest shoal on earth has formed off the coast of South Africa.

Known as the ‘Sardine Run’, it is one of the natural world’s greatest spectacles. Stretching up to nine miles in length, two miles in width and 130ft in depth, the shoal can even be seen from space. What makes the process so spectacular is the accompanying cast of creatures who arrive to feed on the fish in a frenetic matter – whales rise from the depths, dolphins, sharks and seals zoom through the shallows and Cape gannet birds dive from the heavens into the waters.
