Former industrial city to be 2017 'Green Capital'

Essen in northwestern Germany has been announced as the European Green Capital for 2017. The city, which was formerly at the forefront of coal and steel production, was recognised for its efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and water consumption, and for promoting nature and biodiversity in its green spaces.
