Everest: the moving mountain changes direction

China’s national survey agency has reported that Mount Everest has shifted 3cm southwest due to the devastating earthquakes that hit Nepal in April and May. Before the quakes, Everest was moving slightly northwest at a rate of 4cm per year and had risen 3cm in the last decade, but the 7.8-magnitude earthquake has shifted the course southwest. The Nepal earthquake triggered many avalanches on the mountain, killing 18 people and destroying the climbing base camp.  Read more: theguardian.com
