2016’s Copa America tournament in doubt

Next year, one of the world’s oldest and most popular sporting events – the Copa America – will be turning 100 years old. The centenary tournament featuring 16 football teams from across North and South America was due to be held in the USA, but since the arrest of seven top FIFA officials in Munich last week, it is uncertain whether the competition will go ahead. The event has been further called into doubt by the order for the arrest of the owners of the tournament’s broadcasting rights. As Jose Luis Meiszner, the general secretary of the South American Football Confederation, said, ‘The president of one of the confederations is under arrest, the companies that own the rights have had their funds blocked…nobody can seriously say that things in the future are going to be as foreseen.’ The 2016 tournament would have been the first time it was was held in the United States.
